An Out of This Universe Post Process with Ziggy Stardust

For Moonage Daydream, we worked directly with director Brett Morgan and his team at Public Road Productions.

This was a hugely demanding experimental documentary that involved a large amount of footage from different sources.Aside from the various music videos, films, video art, and other footage, a bulk of the latter reels included live performances from 1975 in Europe. These were provided as 10-bit UHD DPX scans on multiple HDDs that were converted and conformed in DaVinci Resolve.

“My producer daisy chained a bunch of USB hubs and at some point we had around 12 drives plugged in all at once with the filmed performance footage”, says Jake. “We had a few areas that needed eye-matching due to zeroed out timecode to get everything lined up, otherwise most of the scans had source timecode intact.”

There were a total of 9 reels and a total runtime of 2 hours and 15 minutes. For the 4K finish we delivered 3840x2160 23.976 scene-linear EXR sequences to Company 3 where Tyler Roth handled the color. Patches were supplied for areas of the edit that continued to change after lock.

Onlining with Resolve let us have the flexibility when dealing with any conform issues that popped up during post and allowed our workflow to be as streamlined as possible.
