West Coast Workflows for Desert Landscapes

Savanna by Amaffi features collaborative workflows with director Jeff Tomsic, while shooting in Saudi Arabia, and posting around the world.

Working with both an external VFX vendor, director, editor, and assistant editor (all of which were in different locations from one another), cuttingboard needed a way to tie everyone together under one roof. Utilizing the power of LucidLink we were able to connect everyone to a single “filespace” or “cloud drive” where we could cut on Avid, finish in Resolve, and share our final deliverables.

Working directly with VFX vendor Rokken Studios, all source plate pulls were output from Resolve as 10-bit DPX sequences that got conformed via EDLs from Avid. These were uploaded to Rokken’s LucidLink filespace for delivery on a fast fiber connection. Comps were then delivered on the same filespace and conformed in Resolve.

“Because we had instant access to the artist’s comps via the cloud drive, there was no need for downloading or uploading to our local storage or filespace”, said Jake. “We could conform directly to our timelines for updates as well as QC checks.”

Once all VFX and edits were approved, cuttingboard trimmed all source media from their corresponding filespaces to their internal I/O partition for delivery to colorist Alex Martin. Following the grade being finalized, all timelines were reconformed with graded media that was transferred back to cuttingboard’s I/O partition via Martin’s SILOSYNC.

“It was a seamless process going from conform to grade and back to finishing in Resolve. From there we finished with titles, mix, and final graphics before delivering to Jeff and his team.”
